How to add a new color to your wardrobe
Let’s talk about how to add a seasonal color to your spring rotation without starting from scratch. This is where having a solid foundation of neutrals in basic pieces like pants, outerwear, and even accessories is important. By basic, I mean no frills or flourishes. Think of these pieces as the backdrop from which your new seasonal color will stand out. This allows you to incorporate new pieces in colors and styles that suit your current mood as old ones wear out.
Example
Let’s look at an example. In this capsule wardrobe, the pants, jacket and bag are in neutral colors: navy blue, white, and beige. These create the backdrop against which the pretty peach and bright blue colors stand out. The peach contrasts with the navy blue while the bright blue is on the same spectrum as a navy blue. Both are lighter colors than navy blue and darker than the white. This contrast creates visual interest, something for the eye to see and somewhere for the eye to rest.
I used my standard capsule wardrobe formula to show you how many outfits can be created from just a few items. The outfits are versatile because of the different tops. The t-shirt creates casual looks for warmer days. The sweater while still casual is more elevated than a sweatshirt and can be worn on chilly mornings and evenings. The shirt is more elevated than the t-shirt and can be worn on its own or layered with the other items for more options.
How to personalize
Accessories are where you can really change up the looks. I kept the jewelry classic with simple pearl earrings. I like fun shoes, and if you only have a few pairs they wear out quickly. This means you can experiment with different styles and colors faster than maybe you would with your tops or other accessories. Not included here is a hat, which I recommend for sun protection this time of year. A ball cap keeps it casual, whereas a sunhat would be more elevated. With accessories there is room to play and personalize.
